Christel Cantrell
Howell County Rural Fire District #1
West Plains, MO
Christel Cantrell is one of the most dedicated firemen at Howell County Rural Fire District #1, according to fellow firefighter Chris Wilibanks who nominated her. In fact, she is one of the reasons the department is involved in the Safe Firefighter of the Month program.
Christel responds to scenes with the brush truck and the department's air support vehicle as needed, and she does a great job of responding to the call safely. While on the scene she works with the firefighters to make sure everyone tags in for accountability.
“Keeping track of all personnel at the scene of an emergency is the best way I’ve found to make sure everyone goes home,” Cantrell said. “In addition to the ID tag system, it’s vital for firefighters to wear the proper protective gear at all times.”
According to Wilibanks, Cantrell always has helpful and friendly advice for the fireman on safe practices, and she is also always looking out for the well being of the department and the safety within it.
Cantrell also believes it’s important to give back to the community. She takes time to schedule fire prevention sessions for neighboring schools and throughout the community. When she learned that some families in West Plains do not have home fire alarms, Cantrell applied for a fire safety grant, which she hopes will fund the purchase of alarms for all Howell County residents.
