Start Your Own Program
From this site, you can get everything you need to start your own Safe Firefighter of the Month program at your firehouse.
Use the form at the bottom of this page to request your “Safe Firefighter of the Month” kit. Of course, you can set up the program any way you see fit – but below is our recommendation for running an effective campaign.
1. Kick off the program by holding a special meeting with your squad. Highlight the importance of the 16 Life Safety Initiatives and talk about each one. Remind your team that the safety initiatives are all about physical fitness as well as emergency procedures. Each year, more firefighters die of heart attacks than from fire-related injuries.2. Each month, collect nominations for “Safe Firefighter of the Month.” You’re looking for those firefighters who go above and beyond to make health and safety a priority. You could establish a nominating committee or be less formal about how nominations are submitted. The goal is to get participation from as many team members as possible.
3. Choose the most appropriate nominee to honor each month. Use one of the award certificates to publicly recognize your “Safe Firefighter of the Month.” Hold a brief ceremony to present the certificate at a regular meeting or training session. Use the enclosed poster to honor the winners and display a snapshot of each firefighter.
4. Nominate your monthly winners to be named the “National Safe Firefighter of the Month.” Go to the submit a nominee form and complete the submission and submit. Each month, a top candidate will be chosen from the submissions made by firehouses all over the country. The winners and nominees will have their photos and profiles displayed on the website for all to see.
At the end of the first year of the program, a “Safe Firefighter of the Year” will be chosen from among the monthly winners. Hale will award a health & safety prize package to the firehouse of the winning firefighter.
