Horry County Fire Station 2
Little River, SC

Captain David Howell of Horry County Fire and Rescue prepares for his shifts days in advance, according to Mike Medeiros, the fellow firefighter who nominated him. He creates lesson plans for his crew and they make a point to check for any potential dangers, both on and off emergency calls.

Daily fitness routines, job-related repetition skills and emergency situation simulations are all tasks that Captain Howell works with his men to master. Captain Howell has also implemented CrossFit training at the station, an exercise program designed specifically for fire and military personnel.

The time and effort has really paid off, because the Horry County crew is able to compete in the nationwide firefighter combat challenge. Captain Howell’s team placed 5th in the world in 2010 and have been state champions every year since 2007. It’s not only for bragging rights. According to firefighter Medeiros, Captain Howell participates in these programs to promote fitness awareness across the country and to bring positive attention to the fire service industry as a whole.

“I try to stress safety and fitness training for everyone in the department,” said Captain Howell. “It pays off if you can get everyone to put in the time.”
